For those who safari off the beaten path, Samburu National Reserve is an especially rewarding experience. It is hot, dry, not overly touristy, and yet home to a wide variety of wildlife. This rough country of acacia trees, riverine forest, and wide savannahs is frequented by the big cats, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The Ewaso Ng'iro river, which cuts through the arid plains, is a life-giving oasis for numerous species, including over 900 elephants.
Despite being the most visited park in the north of Kenya, the area is still calm and empty. Numerous big and small species, including baboons, warthogs, gazelles, dik-dik, and impala, can be seen here. You'll also be taken aback by the more than 450 different species of birds that adorn the trees, riverbanks, and skies. Seek out vultures, hornbills, starlings, eagles, storks, and bee-eaters.
Samburu may seem like an empty untamed desert at first, but if you walk carefully, you'll discover the park's treasures of wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, big cats, and baboons. You might find that this relaxed, uncrowded park ends up being your favorite.
