It is situated in the Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, directly south of Lake Natron. In Maasai, Oldoinyo Lengai translates to "The Mountain of God." At 2962 meters above sea level, the summit of this stratovolcano offers direct views into the caldera of the only carbonatite volcano in the world and the only officially recognized active volcano in Tanzania. Since 1883, eruption records have been kept, with the largest eruption depositing ash 100 kilometers away in Loliondo, on the Kenyan border to the northwest.
The floor of the crater can be crossed on foot. Due to the intense heat throughout the day, the scarcity of water, the uneven and steep ash and crumbly rock slopes, and the significant elevation increase, climbing Oldoinyo Lengai is difficult. Typically, you can begin your ascent to the peak early in the morning and arrive there just before sunrise. A clear view of Soda Lake Natron, which serves as a good breeding ground for a variety of bird species, including the more than 350 distinct kinds of Flamingos, Pelicans, and Geese, can be seen from the peak of Mountain Ol'doinyo Lengai.
