At 4,566 meters above sea level, Mount Meru is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and the fifth-highest peak on the African continent. The mountain dominates the Arusha National Park ecology, and it offers breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak.
The entire eastern side of the mountain was destroyed by a huge volcanic explosion about 250.000 years ago, drastically altering the mountain's current distinctive form. In fact, it drops on regular slopes to the east, opening into a horseshoe-shaped caldera bounded by a rock, while to the north, west, and south it lowers. Additionally, there are many volcanic cones visible on the mountain's slopes.
You can choose to climb Mount Kilimanjaro fewer days after climbing Mount Meru, as Meru is a great place to acclimate to high altitudes. The modest Mount Meru is quietly preferred by many climbers of both peaks. Mount Meru is still a very tall peak even if it is around 4,000 feet lower than Mount Kilimanjaro. Never undervalue Mount Meru. Still, acclimating to altitude is essential for a successful summit. Meru
