Following breakfast, we leave the hotel and travel through stunning scenery to Londorossi Gate, where you must finish the entry procedures. This journey takes approximately four hours. Proceed to the Lemosho trailhead by car. We start our hike at the trailhead and travel through untouched woodland until we reach the first camp spot.
Follow the trail that leads away from the rain forest and onto a savannah including heather, tall grasses, and volcanic rock covered in beards of lichen. After climbing through the verdant, undulating slopes and across multiple streams, you will arrive at the Shira Ridge and then descend gradually to Shira 1 Camp. This is when you first see Kibo on the other side of the plateau.
We explore the Plateau of Shira. Heading east on moorland meadows, the hike is moderate and leads to Shira 2 Camp. The heath zone is home to unusual Senecio trees and an abundance of wildflowers.
We proceed eastward, climbing a hill before turning southeast to reach the 300-foot-tall volcanic rock structure known as the Lava Tower. Next, we veer off the main path to Moir Hut, a little visited location at the foot of Lent Hills. Lent Hills offers a wide range of treks, which makes it a great place to get acclimated. One of the world's tallest plateaus is the Shira Plateau.
After a somewhat difficult ascent out of Moir Valley, we go to the top of Lent Hills and then rejoin the main trail. The trail ascends across a field of rocks and descends gradually to Buffalo Camp. This portion of the trail provides breathtaking views across the plains that extend to the Kenyan/Tanzanian border and lie north of Kilimanjaro.
The ground gets more sparse as we ascend Buffalo Ridge. We will savor the feeling of being in the mountains and the environment on this seldom-used route. We hike up the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro via secluded valleys until we reach Third Cave.
We make our way up and across the saddle that separates Mawenzi and Kibo. We proceed to School Hut, our camp. We take a nap and eat an early dinner here to get ready for the summit day.
Very early in the morning, sometime after midnight. Start your ascent to the top. This is the hardest part of the walk, both physically and mentally. At this altitude and time of day, there can be intense wind and cold. You will climb for several hours in the dark, stopping often for brief rests. You will be rewarded with the most spectacular sunrise you are likely to witness coming over Mawenzi Peak near Stella Point (18,900 feet). Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest peak on both the African continent and Mount Kilimanjaro, at last.
Once you've enjoyed and congratulated yourself on reaching the summit, head straight down to the Mweka Hut tent site, stopping for lunch at Barafu. Trekking poles are useful because the trail can be extremely difficult on the knees and is very rocky. Due to Mweka Camp's location in an upper forest, mist or rain is possible in the late afternoon. You will have your final meal on the mountain later in the evening, followed by a well-earned sleep.
Proceed down to Mweka Gate on your final day and pick up your summit credentials. It can be muddy and damp at lower altitudes. Proceed to Mweka Village after an additional hour from the gate. You will be picked up from Mweka Village and driven back to your accommodation in Arusha town by a car. END OF THE TREK.
