After breakfast, pick up from your accommodation at 8 a.m. and head from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate to complete the necessary formalities before starting our journey. The hiking track starts with an ascent through a stunning tropical rain forest. We have the chance to see blue monkeys at the higher edge of the forest. After that, the path opens up to reveal stunning slopes till we arrive at Mandara Hut.
We begin the day by navigating through the forest until the path emerges onto elevated terrain. Kibo and Mawenzi, two of the three volcanic peaks that make up Kilimanjaro's summit, might be visible for the first time to us.
This additional day can be used for day trekking on Mawenzi Ridge to help with acclimatization. The unusual topography provides breathtaking vistas of Mawenzi and Kibo. We take a short while to explore the surroundings before returning to Horombo Hut.
After a slow ascent, we traverse the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo, which is a lunar desert. Kibo Hut, our camp, is positioned at the base of the Kibo crater wall. We take a nap and eat an early dinner here to get ready for the summit day.
Our push to the top starts quite early in the morning, about midnight. This is the hardest part of the walk, both physically and mentally. At this altitude and time of day, there can be intense wind and cold. We climb for several hours in the dark, pausing sometimes but not too much. You will be rewarded with the most spectacular sunrise you have ever seen coming over Mawenzi Peak at Gilman's point (18,600 feet). At last, we reach Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point on both the African continent and Mount Kilimanjaro.
After spending a few moments taking in the plains of Africa and your accomplishment, we descend to Horombo Hut. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
Our final day involves a lengthy hike through the tropical rainforest, most of which is downward. We pick up our summit credentials once we get at the park headquarters at Marangu gate. We'll be picked up by a car here, which will take us back to our accommodation in Moshi or Arusha.
